ABSTRACT

The subbie is told not to concern himself with such trivia, but concentrate on 'being proactive' and that 'none of his competitors will bother'. Once on site, he finds the same old problems of late building and poor access to work faces, all symptoms of an overall delay in the project. The subbie finds he is expected to jump from one work face to another, in an ad hoc manner. Programmes are abandoned. Milestone dates are 'written in stone', and he is expected to flood the job with labour and work weekends. An extension of time would be nice. Some reimbursement would be even better. However, the subbie is referred to those onerous conditions. There are demands for him to prove that he has followed the rules in every particular, with timely notices and records. Communications are handled by the 'Gestapo', and it may take a very long time.
