ABSTRACT

The following section is a comprehensive international bibliography of critical books, chapters, articles, reviews, and introductions concerned with BR, and of significant critical mentions or brief discussions of BR in the broader context of CD's works, Victorian fiction, the historical, political, and social novel, or general examinations of literary themes and techniques. Unpublished dissertations are also included, provided they deal significantly and substantially with BR. Several publications containing only passing mentions of BR in relation to its historical or topical materials, or in regard to CD's views of history and politics, may be traced in sections II, B and II, C of this guide (pp. 74-220 passim). However, all substantial critical and interpretive commentaries on BR are entered in this section, even if they have been entered and annotated in previous sections of this guide. For annotations and topographical guides to BR, synopses of its plot, and dictionaries of its characters, see section III, B below. For a list of previous bibliographies of studies of BR, all less inclusive than the following section, see section III, C below. And for commentaries on BR's composition, publication, and adaptations, see sections I, A, 2-3, and I, B, 4 above.
