ABSTRACT

Sugarcane originated in Southeast Asia and Melanesia and it is now cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries worldwide used for the production of sugar, ethanol and other industrial products. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), nowadays sugarcane is the world’s largest crop by production quantity. Especially in 2012, it was cultivated about 26×106 hectares (6.4×107 acres) in more than 90 countries all over the world with a worldwide harvest of 1.83×109 tonnes (Figure 3.2).
