ABSTRACT
Geopolitical discourses are also shaped by public opinion, which is why Chapter 4 examines how the changing Polar Regions are represented in national newspaper reporting in the American polar-rim states. Assessing the constellation and significance of actors as well as the representation of positions in discourses (which are also investigated in the Chapters 3 and 5), Chapter 4 provides an overview of the newspapers under analysis and illustrates how they represented the processes and dynamics that have concerned the Arctic and Antarctic at different points in time. To what extent do newspapers published in the polar-rim states represent the politics of the changing Polar Regions in a way that underpins, corresponds with, or challenges the geopolitical reasoning (and imaginaries) that predominate in practical geopolitics as identified before? This is the main question to which Chapter 4 provides answers.
