ABSTRACT

In 1967 planning work for the metropolitan region resumed, resulting in a regional plan being approved in 1979 under a new law on regional planning in the metropolitan region. In the municipal planning sphere the Town Planning Act 1938 was the main instrument until the new Municipal Planning Act 1977. The planning authorities come up with the first move, but the citizens are given an opportunity to voice their opinion before a final plan is proposed. Danish planning legislation has been changed radically during the 1970s. A new element in Danish planning legislation is the rule that before the final proposals for a regional plan are worked out, the regional council must publish alternative draft proposals and state the assumptions upon which the drafts are based. The National and Regional Planning Act covers all Denmark with the exception of the metropolitan region of Copenhagen, where one-third of Denmark's population lives.
