ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the practical options for setting up a snack area and a cooking area. A toast or cereal station is the perfect way for children to be involved in preparing the own snack. Once the children are familiar with this snack preparation, the recipe cards can be added together with the relevant equipment. A toast or cereal station is the perfect way for children to be involved in preparing the own snack. A toaster can obviously pose a risk, so it is important to risk and benefit assess this as a staff and then with the children. The toast station could explore different types of bread. A voting sheet could be put up so that children can vote for the favourite bread or topping. A maximum of 4 children works well and seems to be effective for children working collaboratively. Having a workspace that the children work around allows children to communicate with everyone in the group.
