ABSTRACT

There is registration expense, travel, and accommodation expense, the opportunity cost of time away from home and work. And there's the work of preparing an original submission six to nine months earlier than the date of the meeting. Learning, time, and expense factors are part of the calculus leading to decisions about which meetings to attend. Here are a few other factors that probably should not be part of that calculus. The American Political Science Association meets annually in late August or early September while the Midwest Political Science Association meets annually in late March or early April. Both meet in North America. The no-show problem is not unique to political science. It happens at many professional meetings, including business meetings. In a digital world with instant and also asynchronous communication it has probably become easier to be a no-show at meetings.
