ABSTRACT

Professor Andrew H. (Andy) Van de Ven's career in the business Academy spans more than 40 years. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1972, Andy taught at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Andy's teaching contributions to the field are also well known. A pioneer in the study of innovation in organizations, Andy also wrote, tested, taught, and published numerous case studies for undergraduate students, masters and PhD students, and organizational executives. Business academics and business schools have lost their "market share" to others in the last 40 years. More and more people are going to corporate training and consulting operations for their development; they used to come to universities. Faculty run their department, their college, their university. New faculty should understand and appreciate how service contributions are governance contributions. Being a professor in academic life is the best job in the world.
