ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how a United Democratic League (UDL) is feasible. It provides the earlier sketch of the league proposal emphasizing the need for a grand compromise between Europe, the United States, and non-western democracies, which sketched a plausible pathway toward a UDL. The UDL Chancellor's most important role would be to organize and direct nation-building and humanitarian intervention actions undertaken by the UDL. The UDL would also be able to offer incentives to other nations in the affected regions that either share responsibility for the problem or benefit from its remedy. Member nations could also offer qualified young persons a chance for fixed terms of service in the larger UDL Reserve as an alternative to regular national service, or for a robust package of benefits—possibly even including immigration into UDL nations. In that sense, the UDL would be more than an ordinary treaty organization, committing member nations to significant responsibilities.
