ABSTRACT

Rotterdam is a city with about 580,000 inhabitants in the south wing of the Randstad. It is associated with manufacturing industry and the activities of the biggest port in the world. In 1985 the municipal council decided to investigate the possibility of developing Rotterdam for high quality businesses. It was decided to develop an area of 18 ha that was already in possession of the municipality. Brainpark I falls within a land-use plan dating from 1957 which designated this site for housing. Leeuwarden is in the north east of the Netherlands and is the capital of the province of Friesland. De Meenthe was built in 1967–8 and consists of 418 dwellings. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. It is part of the Randstad, and there are 700,000 inhabitants within the municipal boundaries. On 15 August 1974 it was decided to move the cattle market and a committee was set up to advise on a new use for the area.
