ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the story of a nurse, Mariam, who was a fellow student nurse during the author's own training. The story of Mariam has taught the fact that the way that someone behaves can tell very little about how they are responding psychically to events. Some resilience researchers in nursing believe that it is a mark of and is evidence of resilience for a nurse to remain ‘at the bedside’. When a nurse leaves the profession, that, they argue, is a sign of a lack of resilience, a kind of failure. The story of Mariam shows how easy it is to make mistakes when looking for resilience.
