ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a first-person account of bullying experiences of Yasmin, a ward nurse. When organisations like an NHS trust have to operate with reducing budgets or with threats of budget cuts, there is bound to be an impact. Managers who, on a good day, are humane and conscientious may end up making unpalatable decisions in the almost impossible position of having to maintain services with inadequate budgets. Senior managers restructure their organisations to try to wipe off costs. In reorganisations, it is often middle-level managers who are made redundant or moved to other less attractive posts. In a review of bullying at work, the British Psychological Society tells that the majority of bullying is done by managers and that younger workers, who may be unaware of their workplace rights, as well as members of ethnic minorities—like Yasmin—are the most vulnerable to bullying. Yasmin was at the receiving end of such a culture and of such behaviour.
