ABSTRACT

This essay addresses related to the ethics of disaster response, particularly in the context of disasters affecting Christian congregations. Following a generalised survey of ethical issues arising from disaster experiences, the essay explores six primary ethical issues that must be addressed by congregations responding to major disasters: these are ethical issues concerning truth telling, the competence of those responsible for responding, the boundaries that must be observed in the aftermath of disasters, planning for financial management of the disaster response, maintaining appropriate confidentiality and, finally, reflecting upon and evaluating disaster response after the event.
