ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various aspects of the area and the people under study. It is considered that only the Kathmandu Valley is a home to more than half of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) population; Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi being considered as the major IDP receiving cities in western Nepal. The IDPs are selected from urban centres because the Maoist insurgency as well as the governmental responses to it is pushing a considerable number of citizens, who fear for their safety and/or lives to move to the urban areas. In Kathmandu, IDPs, political party leaders including Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), I/NGOs and human rights activists and civil society members participated in the programme. The chapter presents an overview of the study area, i.e. Ward No. 6 of Birendranagar Municipality, Surkhet. It describes location and population composition, infrastructures, and population of IDPs. Political affiliation or belief of respondents was explored to make an understanding on the political characteristics of displaced persons.
