ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the basic and relevant aspects of the brain, attachment, and physical changes as it relates to relationships. It presents some of the latest thinking and research in the field of neuroscience related to couple therapy. Neuroscience is the branch of biology that has traditionally studied the brain and nervous system. A basic assumption of both neuroscience and psychotherapy is that optimal functioning and health are related to increasingly advanced levels of growth and integration. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is the field of science that has emerged to study the interrelationship of four biological systems in humans that impact this process: The mind/brain, the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system. Many PNI theorists have argued that psychotherapy aimed at helping to improve a person's appraisal processes and increasing the awareness of coping resources could help restore equilibrium in the face of allostatic load.
