ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the common and, at times, very challenging areas in working with couples: Issues of aging as well as issues related to separation, divorce, and remarriage. Separation can also take place on an emotional level as each partner detaches from the other and begins to contemplate what life would be like apart from the other person. Sometimes, a separation can be helpful in allowing the spouses to learn more about themselves and what they really want in life. Many fear that separation is the final step before divorce. The fact of divorce does not lead to any pathological consequences; though what happens after the divorce may have lasting effects. At the same time, some divorces can be a positive solution to a very destructive family situation. According to Papernow, the rates of divorce of remarriages rise steeply as a result of these challenges.
