ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the emergence of constructivist perspective. It describes the Adlerian approach to couple therapy. The chapter provides the couple's approach to solution-focused therapy. It also discusses the narrative therapy approach with couples. Adlerian therapy was developed in the first half of the 20th century as a reaction to psychoanalysis and reflected a revolutionary approach to human development where individual's perceptions of reality were more important than the therapist's view. The Adlerian approach predates the formal development of marriage and family therapy. Adlerian counselors also believe that behavior is driven by a set of beliefs that are based on subjective perceptions of the world. Adlerian theory is neither deterministic nor fatalistic. In Adlerian therapy, each member of the couple must take responsibility for his or her own behavior. Adlerian therapists use several interventions in order to help uncover these underlying goals and ultimately give the clients the courage to be able to change their behavior on their own.
