ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the three stages of video and film production: preproduction, production, and postproduction. Special attention is provided to outlining preproduction tools. The professionals who comprise the production team are introduced, and students learn the role of these crew members. The language of the elements of moving pictures is examined, and the elements of visual composition are explored. The importance of attention to mise-en-scène is explained along with different shot types, compositions, and moving shots. Classical editing is discussed, and students are introduced to postproduction techniques and transitions. This chapter equips students with the knowledge of how to compose an entire scene seamlessly, highlighting how to maintain continuity and avoid common mistakes in building image sequences.
