ABSTRACT

Incorporating elements of social innovation and entrepreneurship to the engineering and design curriculum can add significant value to higher education institutions. It has the potential to create ancillary social enterprises, enhanced when a curriculum includes sustainable development education and a perspective on technology as a part of a larger socio-technical project or system. By applying an integrated approach, tying responsible research and innovation to the curriculum and developing cocreated solutions that address unmet needs in society, socio-technical projects harness the benefits of project-based, engaged learning in a sustainable way. The chapter unpacks social responsibility from the perspective of the engineering and design curriculum, viewing it as an opportunity to promote sustainable development and social change by developing socio-technical systems in partnership with local communities.
