ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a guide to image-processing techniques for engineers and inspectors who wish to harness the full potential of cameras as an inspection tool for built infrastructure. It describes image-processing methods for Structural Health Monitoring, assessment and inspection related applications, and shows the benefits that adoption of such methods can have for the management of offshore and marine structures. The book outlines good image acquisition practices so that high-quality imagery can be obtained on a consistent and reliable basis and describes the fundamentals of image-processing. It presents several image-processing techniques related to damage assessment and considers an initial course for engineers and inspectors on how to integrate imaging into their inspection regimes. The book provides benchmark performance measures for the techniques under various visibility conditions using an image repository which helps inspectors to envisage the effectiveness of the techniques when applied.
