ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance of sound research methods and creative processes. It introduces students to qualitative and quantitative methods and when to use one or the other, as well as when to mix methods. Examples of major data-collection strategies for undergraduate research (UR) in dance, including conducting library research, exploring primary sources, recording one’s own observations with research journals and field notes, distributing surveys, and conducting interviews and focus groups, are illustrated. The main differences in methods between arts and humanities scholarship and social science research are described.
