ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how the teaching of disability studies is maturing through use of social media, particularly Facebook, how those who teach disability studies are building their own online community to support, mentor and assist each other. It also provides how one United States university's disability studies program has developed unique curricula through a disability studies instructor who uses assistive technology to communicate. Facebook's unique attributes make it a place where group members can easily come together through a common interest like disability studies – it offers a forum in which to become more informed and in which to support and mentor each other. Members can bolster connections and feel less isolated as they share resources and create a community of pedagogy – they can form a "networked public". Matthew Wangeman experience in designing an interactive course as a disabled faculty member has provided pivotal leadership to others developing similar courses.
