ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the productiveness of practice theory approaches for understanding sharing. It outlines the approach of practice theorists to social phenomena and discusses this in relation to others who have also adopted a practice theory approach to understanding what people do in relation to media. Through the concepts of symbolic values, materiality and competencies, this chapter identifies ways of thinking, understanding and feeling about sharing; modes of performing sharing; and ways in which things are shared and thought about sharing, with specific consideration of digital media.
