ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the idea of using the device of a visitor to hook the children in and then to drive the narrative for the storyline. One way of establishing and developing a storyline narrative is through the convention of the Visitor. The visitor can be a real live person, often disguised appropriately. Sometimes the visitor isn't 'live' as such; a puppet might be used, or a video message, or a stuffed animal or effigy. The soldier needed certain information before he could travel back to his own time. Again, it was the character, the relationship and the narrative that stoked the curiosity of the children and motivated them to research, record and present what they had learned in order to help their new friend. Someone saw the character on the floor and another child found an 'emergency pod' beside it. The class were settled down and speculated about who this character was and where it had come from.
