ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how the some of the Upper Primary curriculum outcomes might be delivered through a storyline on the rainforest. It considers curriculum planning from only one perspective. It is really important that the pupils are also consulted. If the storyline is to be successful, the pupils must have a good degree of ownership of it. As the storyline unfolds the pupils can develop the story whilst the teacher ensures that the direction of the narrative enables the learning intentions to be covered. The storyline provides both an audience and a purpose for listening, talking, reading and writing, so that the learners want to explore, compare, explain and argue for their families in the narrative. Comparing and contrasting, and looking at advantages and disadvantages, are all skills that can be developed through taking a narrative approach.
