ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at a storyline aimed at Early Years pupils and based upon a well-known novel, The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, and another storyline aimed at older children, based on a letter from another school asking the class for help and information. A letter can get them interested and immersed and they can be invited to help the author of the letter to find information, solve a problem or give advice. In this way the learners can imagine themselves in a different situation and work out what they might do in the circumstances. The letter asks the class if they will help the owl to overcome a fear of the dark. In this example the teacher was also wanting to do some work on firework safety, so there was also a request for the class to help the owl to stay safe.
