ABSTRACT

The focus in this chapter is on how to diagnose a personality disorder according to the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). First an overview is given about the validity of the concept of personality disorders. Further, relevant and related models of personality as the Five Factor Model and the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in section III of the DSM-5 are described. Additionally, relevant assessment instruments for personality disorder are presented, including structured clinical interviews as well as self-report measures. Moreover, other concepts such as Kernberg’s model are introduced, so that the reader is provided with basic information on these concepts. Besides these aspects, issues such as who should and when they should be assessed, pertinent to clinical assessment of personality disorders, are discussed.
