ABSTRACT

This chapter explores one clinical sport psychologist’s journey toward embracing a feminist identity and incorporating principles of feminist theory into her applied work. The journey begins with an initial resistance to feminism/feminist theory due to the exclusive focus on gender and simultaneous lack of consideration of the impact of other cultural variables on a person’s experience. Subsequently. multicultural and social justice approaches became theoretical staples as these were more culturally inclusive and were a better match with the author’s personal values and approach to her professional work. Despite the initial resistance, as feminist theory evolved and became more rooted in intersectionality, it also became a more natural complement to the multicultural and social justice theories. Ultimately, the author developed a greater appreciation for the application of feminist theory in clinical and sport psychology work and she encourages others to think about how these principles may integrated into their work as well.
