ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will discuss the dearth of research that collectively examines women, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) identities, and race as it relates to sport psychology. Developments of the definitions of sex, gender, sexuality, and intersectionality are reviewed. Applications of intersectionality and feminism are offered as mechanisms to move beyond traditional sport psychology lenses. The result of such application seeks to center individuals with simultaneously existing multiple identities and embodiments within the realm of sport psychology. More importantly, we argue that utilizing such applications “creates space”, increasing visibility of and for those with multiple subordinated identities, namely, LGBTQ women of color, in sport psychology and the broader arena of athletics.
