ABSTRACT

Race is an ever-present social category, and as such it constantly challenges people to recognize and navigate its existence. This is especially the case for children who must learn to recognize race and understand the racial elements of society, whilst managing their own growing sense of racial identity. This chapter explores issues posed by the intersection of race and childhood by examining how children come to understand about race, and how they come to recognize racial prejudice and navigate the social constraints of their own racial identities. These issues are illustrated, in particular, by looking at the issue of race in education, and the question of transracial adoption.
