ABSTRACT

This chapter explains consequences of urban growth on the floodextent are extended by an attempt to assess the changes in flood consequences. It focuses on the possible increases in flooding as a consequence of extensive urbanisation. The chapter also focuses on the potential increase in flood damages given the rapid urbanisation, through increased runoff and exposure of assets. The spatial consequences of the alternate urban growth rates were translated into the growth model as alternate transition rates, thus increasing the number of cell transitions to urban built-up areas and between built-up areas. Consequently, the model outcomes produced only limited changes in flood extent and depths. Yet, in urban flood extent and damages the outcomes show that Dhaka's urban unbridled development is indeed a cause of concern. Out of nine urban development scenarios, the high growth rate scenario resulted in the most dramatic land use and land cover changes in flood-prone areas.
