ABSTRACT

Committed actions are approached with the willingness dial set to ‘high’ for whatever appears. True committed action goes hand in hand with willingness. Committed action, together with values, forms the right side of the Hexaflex and represents the active, behavioural change side of the model. The process calls for change in the service of values, in a flexible manner, rather than continuing rigidly with unworkable behaviours. Sometimes committed actions can include stopping behaviour or holding back. Being a behavioural model, acceptance & commitment therapy incorporates many traditional behavioural techniques, and it is through the committed action process that these can be best involved. This could include using an exposure framework for anxiety, habit reversal methods, or behavioural activation for depression. By consciously acting towards chosen values, the inherent reinforcers in conditional committed action become available, giving a greater sense of purpose and autonomy.
