ABSTRACT

Psychotherapy can be an intense and challenging process for both the client and the therapist. Clients may come to therapy describing traumatic experiences, and while the therapist will focus on helping and supporting the individual, there also needs to be consideration of the demands this places on the therapist. The therapist is exposed to and involved in the client’s emotional experiences, and although in a position of power, they are also in a position of vulnerability. This chapter presents the author’s reflections on her work with clients and discusses how deliberating over her own vulnerability has allowed her to develop further as a therapist.
