ABSTRACT

Developing a professional identity is a key aspect of the training experience for clinical psychologists, and building confidence in being able to assess and manage risk issues is fundamental to this process. This chapter explores the relationship between an individual’s evolving professional development and identity and his/her ability to respond to and manage risk. The chapter provides examples of risk-related scenarios experienced while on clinical training placements and offers reflections on how these were handled. The subsequent impact on the development of professional identity as a clinical psychologist is explored, in addition to ensuring that contextual and organisational factors are considered.
