ABSTRACT

Kailash parikrama is 38 km long. Serdung Chuksum and Cho Kapali are two shrines to the south of Mount Kailash's foothill. Mount Kailash is 35 km from Manasarovar. Manasarovar is considered to be one of the 'Shaktipith', one of the 52 shrines of Kali in Greater India, including modern day India, Pakistan, Nepal, eastern Afghanistan and outskirts of the Himalayas. Swami Pranavanand gives a Manasarovar parikrama route in his book Kailash–Manasarovar, and according to him the parikrama route is merely a 100 km stretch. Pahalgam is the best town for beginning the journey. The Amarnath cave is made of dolomite where dripping water freezes into a pillar of ice, held sacred by Hindus who flock to the cave on 'Sawan Purnima' or the spring full moon in August to worship the icy lingam of Lord Shiva. Ki-Kibber-Dhankhar Gompas are all situated near Kaza and approachable by a mixture of a kaccha and pukka road.
