ABSTRACT

The prejudice of Krishna Menon, the defence minister, against Thimayya, the Chief of Army, was so intense that communication between them was either through the Chief of General Staff or the Quarter Master General. Krishna Menon tried his best to oust Thimayya but could not succeed because of the outcry from all quarters. But he succeeded in destroying the confidence of the prime minister in the Chief of Army Staff and equally destroyed the morale of the army. Jawaharlal Nehru balanced capitalistic state socialism, commercial capitalism and the remnants of feudalism; controlled bureaucratism and military adventurism along with militancy, leftist mass movements of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati and the Telangana revolt. Nehru collaborated with the British imperialism from 1940-5 but Chou fought Chiang in the 1930s and the Japanese in the 1940s. Chou En Lai successfully negotiated the border issues of his country involving both land and sea with all the 13 neighbouring countries, except India.
