ABSTRACT

China's motive was to secure a well-defined boundary along the most formidable, mighty and robust Karakoram in Ladakh and along the Himalayas in Central and Eastern sectors. China and Pakistan have built the Karakoram Highway which links Gilgit area with Rudok through Khunzerab pass (POK) on the Karakoram range and Qaratagh pass, Haji Langar, Lanak la on Kunlun range. In the eastern sector, China's motive was to push India along the Sela range relatively southward and at a higher range and debar India from Tawang which is a trijunction, triangular tract near Bhutan. India's motive was to stretch the boundary line across the watershed of Spiti in Kaurik area near Sumdo and beyond Himalayas in Himachal and Uttarakhand at Zanskar range at relatively low height both for security and for religious reasons. China's motive for claiming Tsarichu River in Subansiri area of Arunachal is purely religious.
