ABSTRACT

Zanskar is a trans-Himalayan range north of the Great Himalayas, situated between Jhelum and Zanskar rivers in the Ladakh area and between Brahmaputra valley and Ganga valley system in Uttarakhand and Nepal. Almost all the major rivers of the Himalayan region originate in the area north of Himalayas and enter the Indian area by cutting through a gorge in the Himalayas. Kashmir valley is bounded by the Great Himalayas in the east and north and Pir Panzal range in the south and west. Pir Panzal range spreads from the Kishan Ganga gorge in north Kashmir to Deo Tibba in Himachal Pradesh where it merges with Great Himalayas. Great Himalayas from Sindhu to Sutlej or from Nanga Parvat to Kalpa is 560 km and from Sutlej to Kali—that is from Kalpa to Garvyang—is 320 km with an average height of 12,000 ft and snow line at 18,500 ft.
