ABSTRACT

Cinema has survived the advent of many competing technologies. In this chapter we look at technologies newly on the horizon for the cinematic arts and the entertainment industry. There are trends and obvious technologies that are expanding. Digital standards, software and media storage will continue to rapidly evolve. We explore the growth of premium large format in exhibition, and large-format cameras including the Monstro, Sony VENICE and Alexa. We discuss the plenoptic camera, drones, LED monitors, object-oriented sound and the future of accessibility. VR, AR, 4D film, motion seats, multiscreen formats, studios’ technical standards, file storage and the Cloud are also explored.
