ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses principles and attitudes governing major components of Anna Halprin's work such as the body and movement, the Life/Art Process, shaping of creative material, movement in nature and performance. Where appropriate, detailed analyses will be included of the application of these approaches to specific performances. The chapter discusses the three levels of awareness are integral to the Life/Art Process which is the cornerstone of Halprin's practice. Halprin's approach is characterized by the integration of the three levels of awareness namely: physical, emotional and mental. The visual and written documentation on Halprin's work from her early days as a modern dancer through to her current work is extensive. From the start of her career she has valued opportunities to share her views on dance in the public arena as demonstrated by the founding of Impulse magazine, through films, videos and the many contributions she has made to journals.
