ABSTRACT

Since the tyre is the only contact that the vehicle has with the road input, it is considered an important aspect of vehicle analysis. This paper is based on how the tyre reacts to various resolutions of a rough road (Belgian paving). The road is measured with the use of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) at a resolution of 1 × 1 mm and subsampled to represent various lower resolutions. A quarter car model is driven over these roads in an ADAMS simulation. The smallest resolution is used as the baseline and the lower resolutions compared to it. The percentage difference in the forces and moments can indicate the difference between the specific road resolutions. The FTire model is used, which also allows for adjustment in the tyre belt element sizes, which plays a large role in solving time and the accuracy of reaction forces and moments.
