Turfgrass Insects

WithL.B. (Bert) McCarty

Insect damage to a golf course can be considerable if ignored or left unchecked. Various above- and belowground insects feed on turfgrass plants, and turf-destroying animals feed on the insects. In addition, nuisance pests such as fire ants are common. Understanding their biology, including life cycles and natural enemies, is critical in insect management. This, along with the various detection and identification techniques used on the major insect problems throughout the world is covered. Included is detailed information on their occurrence, biology and distribution, damage symptoms and signs, environmental and management practices that often are associated with them, inspection techniques, integrated pest management strategies to keep damage below acceptable levels and integrating control options into their management. This includes the imported fire ant as well as mound-building ants.
