ABSTRACT

Modern golf courses typically have two groups of clientele to satisfy: the traditional golfer who still expects high-quality turfgrasses and near-perfect playing conditions year-round and is willing to provide the financial means to achieve this and other players who are out to have an enjoyable, yet, affordable round with friends and appreciate the interaction of the course and surrounding nature, but do not demand or expect such pristine conditions. With either scenario, selecting the proper grass(es), providing good course design and construction, and establishing and growing-in the selected grasses go a long way toward satisfying each group. Following construction, everyone wants “instant” turfgrass so the golf course can open as soon as possible. These expectations place great pressure on the golf course superintendent and/or general contractor. However, planning ahead and optimizing the planting time of the grasses selected dramatically improves the probability of providing a quality turfgrass playing surface as quickly as possible. The various means and methods to establish various segments of a golf course are covered as well as the calculations needed to achieve these.
