ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of calling, explores its origins, and describes some of the benefits and potential challenges associated with searching for and finding a calling. Embarking on a search for calling sounds like something big and monumental. Calling was originally associated with hearing a call from God, and the call involved doing work for God. Some research has focused on defining calling without focusing on the source of calling, for example, Amy Wrzesniewski et al., who defined a calling as the desire to serve a greater good. Since calling is defined as a passion toward a particular domain, it has an emotional component and is therefore subject to the fluctuations of emotion. Calling is a highly individual, personal matter discerned through a process of self-exploration. Calling is the directional axis of vocation and has been found by career researchers and theorists to offer significant benefits.
