ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ways in which the nature of the music industry, with its frameworks and inputs, impact calling, potentially shaping the way music industry professionals' analytical propensity + artistic drive looks, feels, or functions. It provides an overview of influences that act on the industry and shape its fluidity and explores what happens to calling when an industry changes, and ends with a discussion of the impact music industry professionals can have on the industry. The calling research of Shoshana Dobrow Riza and Daniel Heller suggests that while calling provides intrinsic direction for career decision making, extrinsic factors, like the economy, can influence calling. A number of researchers suggest that calling produces positive outcomes when changes arise. For example, in addition to adaptation, a different option would be to take the career path that provides the most financial stability at the time, and put calling aside.
