ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 outlines the factors contributing to the phenomenon of ‘jobless growth’ in Indian manufacturing in the early 1980s. It further assesses labour conditions in the industrial sector. In particular, it examines whether the rise in labour militancy (due to trade unionism) – creating labour market rigidities – resulted in work stoppages, ultimately affecting output and employment growth adversely.
