ABSTRACT

The discovery of the deCentred grand narrative emerges from an interaction between a teacher and students that itself takes the form of an unexpected third space. Calling it a ‘discovery’ might sound dramatic; but discoveries in social research are perhaps inevitable once the very difficult task of negotiating out of Centre thinking is somehow achieved. In a sense, therefore, this Centre-deCentre politics between Kati and her colleagues and friends is already setting the scene for what happens in the classroom. Adichie’s lecture is deCentred by design in that it is speaking explicitly from the margins about how the Centre’s stereotypical imagination of people like her is Othering in its reductive simplicity. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in this book.
