ABSTRACT

The core feature of this chapter, ‘Identifying disasters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’, is to identify the disasters experienced by the A&N Islands. This has been done within the purview of the definition of disaster and in consultation with the High Powered Committee on Disaster Management’s Report. After ruling out cyclones and earthquakes, which occur frequently in the A&N Islands, it is concluded that from the time of recorded history the islands have experienced three disasters: epidemics of syphilis in the late nineteenth century, World War II in the twentieth century and the Tsunami in the early twenty-first century. After identifying the three disasters, the next chapters focus on each of these disasters individually.
