ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how to help children to develop: their thinking about science and design and technology; their vocabulary, including specific scientific and technological language; and their recording skills, including the use of Information Technology. Many adults look back to the time that they were taught science and design and technology at school as a time when they were required by their teacher to find the 'right' answer. Teacher had a particular answer in mind so children played a game of 'guess what teacher is thinking'. As children talk about their ideas in science and design and technology the adult should encourage them to make predictions of what they think will happen if a particular action is taken. Children are expected to learn the 'scientific' vocabulary to name and describe living things, materials, phenomena and processes for the work in 'Life processes and living things', 'Materials and their properties' and 'Physical processes'.
