ABSTRACT

A business report is an organised and objective presentation of facts needed to make decisions and solve problems. There is an increase in report writing for organisations because of (1) business expansion – need for reports in large organisations; (2) globalisation of business – reports written in an increasingly international environment; (3) government requirements – to comply with the law and regulations. While business reports investigate a problem or need and report in a factual manner on what was found, proposals seek permission to undertake further studies, research or investigations into a problem or need. The purpose is to identify needs or problems with the intention of receiving permission from superiors/clients to implement suggested solutions or recommendations. This chapter focuses on formal analytical business reports including not just data or information collected as in informational reports, but conclusion and recommendations. The differences between business reports and proposals are also highlighted.
